Stereotypes are usually assumptions that people make about certain group or members of a particular culture. They are based on an image of what people are like. Stereotypes sometimes can be true, but most of time are not true, because you can not generalise and say that all people are like that. For instance, an stereotype for my culture would be that people in my culture are very noisy and speak with loud voice. I would try to refute that by explaining that not all people do that, and as an example I would take myself. I prefer to speak quietly and not to raise my voice, because the higher the voice you use doesn't mean that the more you are right. As for an English speaking culture stereotype i would comment about the British- people attached stereotype that they are very reserved. My opinion about this is that there are of course British who are reserved, but that is not the case with all of them. I had the chance to go to England, more precisely in Bristol and people there were quite okay and open, of course with exceptions. But the people i met were really friendly with me and they tried to help me as much as they could, considering the fact that i was a foreigner who for the first time visited their country. So stereotypes usually are based on wrong images and we should consider people as individuals and not generalise them.
I totally agree with Berat who said that stereotypes are assumptions that people make about certain group or members of a particular culture and that those are usually based on wrong images, and that we should consider people as individuals; therefore, we should try to not generalize because if these happens then misunderstandings can occur.
For example, there is a stereotype for Albanians being too violent, fighting for everything and being always in a “war” with the others. But, this is only a wrong image that others have and when people think that Albanians are violent, they try to avoid meeting them, try to not become friend with them, etc. But, all this is a wrong image that others have. Only when people come across them, they see how different they are form what the stereotype says. I would try to refute this by giving the example of many Albanians who have won the Nobel Prize for peace, or other prizes, like Mother Theresa who was an Albanian, and also there are a lot of other Albanians who have contributed to peace ether in their places or all around the world. For example, the ex president of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, was trying all the time to solve the problems peacefully, he did not want problems to be solved by fighting.
As for a stereotype of an English speaking culture, I will mention the USA. There is a stereotype for Americans being racist. And the only thing that I would say to refute this is that they chose for a president an African American and this contradicts the stereotype. There are also a lot of other things that can prove that this stereotype is wrong, but this is one that no one can deny.
Fist of all, I will say that stereotypes exist and they will continue to exist as far as humans and the world exits. Stereotypes are judgment or convictions that particular nation has toward the others nations. Each of the nations has culture that differs from the others, and each of the cultures has stereotypes. Some of stereotypes are so well known that can even represent the whole nation. For instance, for Albanians is a common thing if someone says that Albanians think warm blooded, and that they are so inpatient when it comes to any injustice. The other stereotype that I will reveal is that Albanians are so jealous about their wives, which have nothing to do with stereotypes in first place. Some stereotypes such these with jealousy, depend mainly from the person’s individuality and the same ones should not be over generalized. The other stereotype that you might often hear is that Albanians are very fanatic and that they just resist moving with the rest of the world. I totally disagree with this thought because after all, stereo types are nothing except personal thoughts or group belief and have less or nothing to do with the reality.
Well, not all the stereo types are negative some are in our favor too, such as that Albanians are very hospitable and that they view the family as something saint. I will willingly talk about Albanians hospitability and the way how they see the visitor. If a person comes to an Albanian house that person will no doubt be amazed how they will treat him\her. A guest in Albanians house is seen as a part of that family and they will try to please him\her as much as possible even in the cases when that person is unknown, or if that person have no else where to spent the night.
As far I am concerned, British are known as the ones which show no politeness, especially when they go abroad to past their summer holidays. I personally have heard that whenever a British gentleman goes, something must happen, in negative aspect. For instance, I have seen a bunch of people in Greek while protesting against the British foreign, about the lousy noise they make, and because they show no respect for the others visitors who come to spent summer holidays. The other thing that I have heard is that British are so proud about them and they feel like no one is better than they; they think that whenever they go, they will be seen as kings. I do not know whether that is true or not, for the reason that I never had the good luck to meet any British gentleman. On my opinion, everything depends on the person’s attitude, and the way how that person is raised, therefore nothing should be over generalized.
Stereotypes are pre judgments and generalizations about certain groups of people. The word stereotype derives from Greek “stereos tupos” which means “solid impression” (Wikipedia) Thus, stereotypes are impressions from an individual’s behavior or attitude and the generalization that all people belonging to that group share the same opinions or attitudes. Based on stereotypes that people form about certain groups, they expect all people who declare to be part of that group will behave exactly the same. Stereotypes are mostly negative impressions which might lead to misunderstanding and undesirable situations. These pre assumptions about other people are influenced by many factors but mostly by the media. One stereotype about Albanians that I find very annoying is that many people consider them as aggressive who can easily cause trouble. This is also supported by the media and Albanians appear in movies as part of the mafia or a group of terrorists. Many people take these impressions or generalizations for granted and the impression that one person has about one individual becomes the opinion of many others about the whole group that the individual belongs to. One way to refute the stereotype of Albanians being terrorists or violent people is to look back at their history and see that the only thing they have done has been to fight back against occupators and defend themselves. Another way how we can refute this stereotype is to mention the tradition of Albanian hospitality and how much importance they give to welcoming people at their homes, especially foreigners.
The stereotype about Americans being superficial has become very famous and is also encouraged by the media, especially the internet. There are many videos posted about Americans being ignorant of other countries. One way to refute this is that if there has not been for an American to invent the internet, many people would have not even seen those videos. Thus, if Americans are superficial, how come the greatest inventions come from America and it is currently the most powerful country in the world.
Finally, there can be violent or superficial individuals but not a whole group of people can be viewed as such. Undoubtedly, we can find aggressive or superficial people anywhere in the world but we cannot identify them as such according to their ethnicity, race, religion or any other group they belong to.
Stereotypes come as a result of prejudice which sometimes may be true and some other may not be. We should not judge people only when we hear someone say so or by the reaction of one person without having a very firm argument that everything we hear and see in five minutes it is true. There are said a lot of stereotypes about my nation but, which totally disagree is that others consider as not educated people (ignorant). This conclusion it is made based on our history, when Albanians refuted to study in the language of the occupier not because they did want to have an education. I will refute this stereotype proving that even though the Albanians live a broad (they have immigrated) they still continue there education no matter what it costs. A stereotype about the Americans is that they are seen by the others as very quiet and reserved people. I will refute this by taking as example our university teachers which were very friendly with us even though we were their students, for very short period we created a wonderful relationship and we still keep in touch. Stereotypes are unfair judgment towards a group of people. For me stereotypes are not true because is on our personality, in the way how we have been educated and the path we have taken in our lives. For this reason I think none of us should judge base d on the ethnicity, religion, color, or any other reason .
Before is start, I want to comment something on Anitas’ post: ( NO misunderstanding PLEASE ) First of all, I totally agree with that what you said concerning the Albanians, I have somehow the same idea of that what to write in terms of the ‘stereotype’ of my culture. However, I could not agree with you with the ‘stereotype’ of USA as a racist! Unfortunately, Sabrina is an American but I am going to say that what I mean and I hope that it will not lead to some unwanted consequences. We all know the history of the African-Americans in the States. They suffered for years, they were slaves and never respected from the society. We have the case of Mohammed Ali at the sixties who refused to go in Vietnam and was sent to jail only and only because he was African-American. Then, concerning the new President Elected, Obama, I can just say that there is a big background in terms of that and that Americans voted him only and only because he is the one that has a solution to save USA from crisis. His opponent was “a joke”, and Americans somehow felt it that they finally need peace with the Middle East. Since we all know that Obamas’ father was Muslim, Americans knew that he was the right man to vote for at the time when Bush lend USA in two wars in Middle East. I don’t want to say that Americans are racist, but, if Obama had better opponent, I don’t think he would have won the elections. Anyway, I must say that people that live in Tetovo are not bad at all! Before I started to study there, people used to say that they are evil and that they make trouble and so on, but from what I saw in the last four years living in Tetovo, I can say that they are lovely people and very understanding. Not only that, I even started to do business with two companies from Tetovo (we exchange stocks). I must say that it has been developed a bad stereotype in this nation that people in Tetovo are evil. I suggest them to go there, visit the place, and see that what they hear is not correct. Anyway, I said too much about the USA previously, and I will continue the routine! Most of Americans see Muslims as terrorist and they don’t even know what Islam it is! They have created such a stereotype that all Muslims are terrorist, that they are evil, and that USA must “eliminate” them. However, what I suggest to Americans is only once to read the Holly Quran and see that Islam is nothing else but PEACE. I also must say that this stereotype has developed even more in the reign of Bush who even won for the second time of his electoral candidate only because he created fear at Americans because of the so-called “Islamic Terrorists”. This is very wrong and I hope that one day people will realize why Michael Jackson, Mohammed Ali, Will Smith and the other celebrities converted on Islam. Hope somebody reads this… Enjoy…
No misunderstandings Arti. Don't worry, be happy! ;):) I just wanted to say that what I said has nothing to do with politics because if Americans continue to be racist they would have never elected him for a president even though he has the best solution and also we would have seen the cases of the sixties happening even nowadays. I was talking about nowadays, not about forty or fifty years ago... and things have changed a lot from those times... Anyway, it was JUST an example of how I would have refuted that stereotype without being focused that much on politics...
Stereotypes are ideas that group of people have about others who are different from them. Stereotypes can be either positive or negative. For example there is a stereotype for Albanians being too hard headed you can’t change Albanians opinion no matter what happened or no matter what kinds of facts you have. I totally disagree with these thoughts because all depend on person’s character. There is also a stereotype that Albanians are aggressive only because we are good fighters we never give up. Albanians fight for their country they love their nation we fight for our right for the things that belongs to us. But this doesn’t mean that Albanians cause trouble wherever they are. As for Americans stereotype it is said that Americans don’t have fashion sense and I strongly disagree with this because they have it but they don’t use it often. It depends on what country you live and on the style.

Each society has its sterotypes whether for good or for bad. These sterotypes are formed through the assumptions that people create for a particular society based on the things that charachterize them the most. A special sterotype for Albanians is that they are very trouble making and terrorist.I will give an example arguing this from my own experience. In a trip that our university organised around Europe we were in Niece a city in France. We were a big grop of boys and girls and we were walking beside the sea. As we were playing a big grop of boys approached us and they started bothering us. One of them stated to take me frind with force to go with him.Being in a foreign country we could do nothing but beg them not to hurt her. They asked us where are we from and we said that we were albanias. It was amazing to see that as soon as they heard that they imdiately went away not saying anything. This demonstrates that they were frightened just as they heard that we are albanias because they consider us as bad people and terorist. But i truly belive that this is not what albanias are. It is obvious that in every society excist people who behave not in accordance with the rules of a society but it is not ok to charachterize all people by specific behaviors that some peole living in that society do. It is worth to mention that albanias are very hospitable people. They would house a person in need even if they have no conditions to do that. As concerning the Americans a specific stereotype that people have about them is that they are really racist and do not treat people of different nationalities living in America the same.I strongly object this because i believe that this is not what americans are.It was very obvious during the presidental elections in America that they treat people for what they are and for their values and not judge them based on the race or colour. There were millions of white people who supported the black candidate Barack Obama and not the white candidate Hillary or Mackain. From here we can see that they treat people for what they are and do not have racial judgements.
Stereotypes are generalizations and created images (often wrong) about a certain culture, or a group. They influence other people in creating their opinion what the members of that particular culture are like. Stereotypes mainly refer to negative characteristics and often can lead to creating prejudice and negative attitude toward a group of people. There are stereotypes created for all cultures in the world. There is no culture that has been protected from such generalization. One stereotype about the English people is that they are too serious and they don't use body language. The seriousness is an individual characteristic and depends on the personality only. It is nonsense to claim that all English are serious and do not use body language. For example, I have an English friend who is very outgoing, fun, interesting and a bright person. He is everything but serious. A very well known stereotype for the Turkish men is that they all have mustache. This is also evident that it is not true, because it is a matter of style. Not all Turkish men have mustache. This stereotype has occurred mainly because of the old Turkish warriors, kings and leaders who tend to have mustache, but this is no common practice among the ordinary Turkish men.
In my opinion, stereotypes are judgments before knowing enough about that particular nation. I never liked to talk about this issue because I do not like to judge someone before I know them. Especially, if we talk about a whole nation. I do strongly believe that nothing and no one can have an impact on someone’s attitudes. What if we judge people based on that to what nation they belong? Is there a nation with only good or bad people? NO. For example, I heard that others say about Albanians are rough! Then, why do we use the word Albanians to refer to these people?! And now since we have a rough nation, I was wondering which is that smooth nation? Because, if we have rough nation than there must be a smooth one so they can differ from one another!! I would say that Albanians are also known for their hospitability (I read this in England in one book). For example, we serve the best that we have in our house to our guests. If we have guests from abroad, than, we buy them a souvenir so that they can remember us and the time when they were in here (for example, something that has to do with our hero Skenderbeu). I have also heard that people from England are very “cold” and that they do not like it when someone goes to their house to spend a night. I have never had the chance to find out about this “sleeping issue”, but what I heard was not true in some cases as far as this “coldness” issue is concerned.
Stereotype is an overgeneralization of some characteristics of a group of people, a country, a region ect. Stereotypes are partly true and partly false because it is impossible to know everybody. Stereotypes disappear very slowly, sometimes never. People use stereotypes because they like to simplify things, it is easy to remember and funny. Some people think they are the only ones who are correct, but it has all to do with people personality. One of the most known Albanian stereotypes is that they are not punctual and they do not respect rules. But I would refute it because it is a personal matter. I am always on time and I do not want to make people wait for me. I know many Albanian people that are punctual. No one can say that all Albanians are same because even two sisters are not same how come a nation can be the same. One stereotype for English people that I have heard is that they do not know how to wear. They usually wear socks with sandals. They are a nation that do not care what other say about them. They are wearing things that they feel comfortable and do not bother about anything. There is a proverb that says: “They laugh because I am different from them, but I laugh because they are all same”
There are many definitions about culture in general and wont be appropriate if we generalize that culture is strict. Because of the fact that certain people although the fact that they are members of a particular cultural group human beings after all are individuals. And they have their own tasted and manners of behavior. But despite this fact unfortunately there exist stereotypes about every culture. Some of them are true, but some of them are not. As concerning my own couture there are many stereotypes about Albanians which in some case are true and most of them are not. Like for ex: People think that Albanians are very warm-blooded and temperament full , which is true but not on the negative context like many people think that this temperament is used for negative purposes : getting into fight , being intolerant towards others etc. There is also another stereotype that I don’t like at all is that Albanians are not opened towards other cultures . Because it is not true at all, Albanian people respect every culture and the fact that we preserved our cultural values and traditions lies on the fact of our history in the Balkans. That because of wars and occupation in the Balkans we tended to preserve our traditions and norms not to lose the cultural identity. There are some stereotypes for example about British people that they are very cold from nature and reserved towards strangers. I don’t agree with this stereotype because In the end it is not true ,it all depends on the personality of the person.
